Sūtra
aśūdrāṇām aduṣṭa-karmāṇām upāyanaṃ vedādhyayanam agnyādheyaṃ phalavanti ca karmāṇi || 6
Telugu
అశూద్రాణాం అదుష్టకర్మాణాం ఉపాయనం వేదాధ్యయనం అగ్న్యాధేయం ఫలవన్తి చ కర్మాణి || 6 ||
Translation
[For all these], excepting śūdras and criminals, [are ordained] the initiation [upaṇayana], the study of the Veda, and the setting up of the sacred fire; and [their] works are productive of rewards [in this world and the next]. (Manu 2:35.)
Commentary / Explanation
If one omits the ‘a’ prefix in aśūdrāṇām the meaning would be — “those śūdras who are of impeccable behaviour may also be initiated etc.”
